God of Medicine’s Birthday in Taiwan – April 19, 2019

Since 1994, Baoan Temple, 保安宫, in Taipei has transformed the traditional birthday celebrations of the God of Medicine or Baosheng Dadi, 保生大帝, into an international cultural festival.

Known as the Asia Pacific Baosheng Cultural Festival, a series of public events was spread over two months and overlapping with birthday celebrations of four other deities; Zhu Sheng Niang Niang, Mazu, Heavenly Holy Mother and Emperor Sheng Nong. 注生娘娘, 妈祖,天上圣母,神农.     Mazu, also spelt Matsu and Ma-tsu, is the Chinese patron goddess who is said to protect seafarers, such as fishermen and sailors.

After her death, she was remembered as a young lady in a red dress, who would forever roam over the seas.

    Literary Day is a Chinese holiday celebrated annually in Taiwan on May 4. It commemorates the May Fourth Movement that emerged in the late 1910s.

    The May Fourth Movement was an anti-imperialist, political, and cultural movement that emerged in the late 1910s. It grew out of student demonstrations that took place in the city of Beijing on May 4th, 1919. The protesters objected to weak response of the Chinese government to the Treaty of Versailles. Protests spread throughout the country and lead to the upsurge of Chinese nationalism.

    The May Fourth Movement is closely tied with the New Culture Movement. This movement emerged in the mid 1910s due to the disillusionment with traditional Chinese culture. Its members called for creation of the new western-oriented culture. The May 4th demonstrations marked a shift from cultural activities to political mobilization.
