Event Details

Ghost Festival, also known as the Hungry Ghost Festival, is a traditional religious festival that is celebrated in Taiwan on August 22, 2021.

Taiwan’s Ghost Month is observed in the 7th month of the lunar calendar. For 2021 starts from August 8 to September 6.

It is said that Taoists and Buddhists believe that the gates of hell are opened for “hungry ghosts” to roam the world of the living in search of food, money, entertainment, and possibly souls. A “hungry ghost” is a being that has been sent to the underworld to suffer an eternal state of hunger for their misdeeds or for not having a proper burial.

There are special activities during Ghost Month which mainly involve burning joss paper (ghost money). It’s believed, that this paper after burning is used by ghosts, that’s why special banknotes, houses and a papier-mâché form of clothes, gold and other goods are also burned.

A special loud entertainment show is also organized for the ghosts at night. It usually includes Chinese opera, dramas and burlesque shows. The shows are very loud, because the sound attracts the ghosts. After the end of the festival people float water lanterns or set them outside of their houses making sure that the ghosts find their way back home.

There are many taboos that have to be remembered during ghost month: never stroll at night, don’t swim, don’t move to new house or start a new business, don’t hang clothes outside at night, don’t pick up money found on street, don’t sing and whistle and keep away from walls.

The Taiwan News has written an article about 12 taboos to especially watch out for over Ghost Month.

Look out for the colorful temple parades and captivating performances that may happen across the city on this day!
