The Community Menu

All your menu tabs are neatly organized by their headings within the Taipei Expat Community menu. It displays your entire community features that only members have access to.

The community page is your News Feed. It is the main page of the expat community found on your profile menu bar. This community page displays shared content such as other member’s posts, informative advice, events, listings and other shared activities made by the other expat members. Depending on how each members privacy settings, you will be able to see posts made by your friends, as well as other members that have various close connections and shared interests to your network and profile.

Recently Active Members

The ‘recently active members’ widget shows who was recently active within the Taipei community. These particular members are more likely to respond quicker due to their frequent activity within the community. If they are currently offline, they’re sure to return again and catch up with their notifications, messages, invitations and invite requests.

Who’s Online

The ‘who’s online’ widget shows which members are currently online. Don’t be afraid to say hello, and expand your network! Active members are more likely to respond quicker due to their recent and frequent activity within the community.

Community Groups

The ‘groups’ widget shows what groups are currently active. The Taipei expat groups and clubs are formed by like-minded expatriates who get together regularly to enjoy their chosen discussions, activities and even to meet with people who share common interests. These groups and clubs provide a great way to meet and learn off new people, as well as to expand your social and professional networks within the community.

Finding Friends within the Taipei Community

Finding other like-minded members to connect with is easy. In fact, there are many ways to build up local professional and social networks within the community.

1. Search for other members with common interests

Your profile has a very useful friend searching tool that helps you find other like-minded expats within the Taipei community. In order to take advantage of this searching tool, you must first ensure that you have set all your interests within your profile.

To do this, go to your interests within your Profile Settings, set them all and save your preferences. Once they are set, return back to your Profile Details and see them listed as interest links under the Profile Interests heading. Each interest is a link that will search for other members who share that interest with you. You are able to visit these members in common, and be able to contact them and add them as a friend to your Taipei expat network.

2. Find friends using the recently active members list

You can search through the recently active lists to view the active members’ profile details. They are more likely to respond quicker due to their frequent activity within the community. If they are currently offline, they’re sure to return again and catch up with their notifications, messages, invitations and invite requests. You can find all the recent and current active members directly from the Taipei Community.

3. Find friends within common groups, forums, events and activities

You are able to interact and connect with other expat members through all these community features. If you feel you have common interests with the other members, don’t be afraid to reach out and network with them. Send them a friend request and expand your professional and social networks within the Taipei expat community.

4. Posting a classifieds ad for a meetup

Another ideal way of building up your own expat network is by letting them contact you through a classified ad within the Personals Category. All your ad listings are hosted on your profile, so it is easy for members to find and connect with you. Make sure you keep your ad listing clear and to the point for the best possible results on what you are looking for.

You can also post any type of meetup listings in the Personals category of the Classifieds.

Adding Friends

Adding friends to your Friends List is simple. Go to the members profile and you should see the ‘Add Friend‘ option on their profile menu bar. For mobile devices, the ‘Add Friend‘ option is under the member’s cover image.

Once you have added a member as a friend, they will get a notification to accept your friendship by email. You will be notified once they have approved your friend request.

Unfriending Members

Unfriending someone within your friends list is easy. Go to your Friends List and you should see the ‘Unfriend‘ option by each member in the list. Please note that the unfriended member won’t get a notification that you removed them from your friends list.

Blocking Members

If you wish to take a break from someone, you can by simply blocking them. To block someone on your friends list, go to your Friends List and find the ‘Block‘ option by the member listed. If the member isn’t on your friends list, you can search All Members within the community. Once you have found the person, the block option will be by their listed profile.

You can view all your blocked members within your Blocked Members list. If you wish to unblock them, return to your Blocked Members list and select ‘unblock’ by the chosen member’s profile.

The blocked member won’t get a notification that you have censored them from your profile. Blocked friends will remain on your friends list until you unfriend them. This is because blocking someone is less about unfriending them as that is a completely different option.

Please note, you won’t be able to message a blocked friend until you unblock them.

Your Profile

Your Profile is the first place you visit once you have signed into your account. Your profile can be found within the Community menu. You can find all your profile information displayed there, along with your profile menu bar that takes you to your Profile, Details, Activity, News Feed, Events, Groups, Listings, Forums, Friends and Bookmarks.

Setting up your profile details and keeping them up-to-date is an effective way to build up a decent network of local expat members that share many common interests with you. This is because the other members may choose to visit your profile details in the aims of finding other like-minded members to connect with. Therefore, it’s worth to update your Profile Details, Personal Information, Interests, and Contact Information.

Your Wall

Your wall is the main page of your Activity which is one of the main options on your profile menu bar. This is the page where you share posts, status updates, images, video and other various media files.

Depending on your privacy settings, your posts can be seen and replied to by your friends or publicly within the community. To see a specific member’s activity, simply go to their profile and select Activity from their own profile menu.

Your Listings

This option allows you to view and edit all your Active Listings that you have posted on Taipei Expats. You can also find listings options at the top of this page to disable or enable listings, as well as to create new listings. To see a specific member’s listings, simply go to their profile and select Listings from their own profile drop-down menu.

Your Forums

You are able to view and keep track on all your forum posts and replies in your Forums. This option is found in your profile drop-down menu.

Depending on your privacy settings, you can allow your forum posts and replies to be seen by your friends or publicly within the community. To see a specific member’s activity, simply go to their profile and select Forums from their own profile drop-down menu.

Please note, this option may not show if you don’t have any forum posts and replies.

Your Comments

You are able to view and keep track on all your blog and post comments in your Comments. This option is found in your profile drop-down menu.

Depending on your privacy settings, you can allow your forum posts and replies to be seen by your friends or publicly within the community. To see a specific member’s activity, simply go to their profile and select Comments from their own profile drop-down menu. 

Please note, this option may not show if you don’t have any blog or post comments.

Your Friends

Your Friends List shows you the list of all your friends, along with any pending friend requests that await your approval. This list also provides the options to message, unfriend or even to block individual members. To find this option, you will need to drop down your profile menu bar to see all the profile options. To see a specific member’s friends list, simply go to their profile and select Friends from their own profile drop-down menu bar.

Your Bookmarks

The bookmark feature is designed to save a link on any type of post or media that exists within the expat community. To bookmark something, simply select the bookmark option within the post’s heading options. All bookmarks are saved to be viewed in your Bookmarks. This option is found in your profile drop-down menu.

Depending on your privacy settings, you can allow your bookmarks to be seen by your friends or publicly within the community. To see a specific member’s activity, simply go to their profile and select Bookmarks from their own profile drop-down menu.

Please note, this option may not show if you don’t have any bookmarks saved.

Messaging

You are able to message your friends within the community by your Messaging options. This feature is on the right-hand side of your profile menu bar.

To compose a message, first enter their name or username or within the ‘send to’ field. In doing so, it will automatically find the specified user for you to confirm the member. You also have an optional subject field which would create a separate chat history if the subject was changed in a new message.

You are only able to send personal messages from your account to your friends. If you wish to take a break from someone, and have them blocked, you would then not be able to message them.

Invite Friends

You are able to Invite Friends to join you in the Taipei Expats community. Once you are at the Invite Friends page, you’ll be able to enter your friends email addresses on an invite form.

The invite form offers an optional pre-made template that will go with accompany your invitation. You also get the option to add invitation links to groups that they may be interested in. Invitees will receive invitations to these groups when they join the site.

You can keep track of your sent invitations by the Sent Invites option at the top of the invite friends page.

Your Profile Picture

Having a profile picture is important. Your profile picture helps others within the Taipei community to identify you. Another important reason of a profile picture is it helps you express yourself in order to allow others to get the right impression of you.

To customize your profile picture, go to the Community menu, and you will see your Profile at the top of the drop down menu. Once you are in your profile, open up your avatar profile menu on the far right hand-side of your profile menu bar and select Profile Settings.

Once you’re in your Profile Settings, scroll down to your Profile Settings menu to find Profile Picture.

– For best results, make sure that your profile image is no smaller than 150px wide by 150px high.

Your Profile Cover

Your profile cover image communicates about who you are. To set your profile cover, go to the Community menu, and you will see your Profile at the top of the drop down menu. Once you are in your profile, open up your avatar profile menu on the far right hand-side of your profile menu bar and select Profile Settings.

Once you’re in your Profile Settings, scroll down to your Profile Settings menu to find Profile Cover.

– For best results, ensure your profile cover is no smaller than 900px wide by 350px high.

Events & Activities

You can find the community events and activities within the Community menu. You will see all the Events & Activities within the drop down menu. This is where you can find all the Taipei events and activities which are hosted by the expat community on an interactive calendar.

This option allows you to view all the active Taipei expat events by an interactive event calendar. You are able to search events by category as well as by month, day, week and etc. The events and activity page also provides a list of the events below the calendar along with a helpful search advanced bar.

Joining these events and activities is a great way to meet new people and expand your social circles within Taipei.

Please note, some events may not appear on this page depending on the privacy settings for each event.

Creating an Event

To create an event, go to the Community menu, and you will see Events & Activities within the drop down menu. You can then open up another drop-down menu to find the Create Event option. You can also add an event directly from within your profile event options. Creating an event requires you to fill out a simple form about the details of the event, such as the date and time, address, and even the option to add an image to represent your event.

There is an added option to setup a registration for your event. Having an event registration means members would have to sign up to your event with each registration requiring your approval as the event administrator. The settings within the event registration offers options to sell tickets and place a limit on the amount of spaces for each event. Setting a limit on the event spaces means that once it has been reached, the event registration would then close. The same would happen when the date exceeds your set period for available registrations.

Groups & Clubs

You can find and join all the active groups and clubs that you are interested in within the Community menu, you will see the Groups & Clubs within the drop down menu. This is where you will find all the different types of groups and activities which are independently hosted by the Taipei community members.

These groups and clubs are formed by like-minded expatriates who get together regularly to enjoy their chosen discussions, activities and even to meet new people who share common interests. They provide a great way to meet and learn off new people, as well as to expand your social and professional networking within the Taipei community.

If you are signed into your account, you get the added group options to create your own group that you can manage as an admin for it.

Joining a Group

You can simply join a group by selecting the particular group you want to join, and click the ‘Join Group‘ option under the group cover image. If you are in the group, you can find the ‘join group’ button within the group menu bar.

Once you have joined a group, you can find it within your groups page. To view all the groups you are in, go to your Profile and look for Groups within your profile menu bar.

Creating a Group

The easiest way to create a group is to go to your Profile drop-down menu, and then from Groups & Clubs, find the Create Event option from the sub menu.

Creating a group requires you to fill out a simple form about the details of the group. These details involve choosing the name and description of the group, along with the group’s settings configuration, forum privacy restrictions, a represented image, group cover photo, and other members to invite to the group.

When choosing a name of the group, it can be whatever you want, and you can change it later, but try to make the group name memorable and searchable so people can easily find it.

Setting the group’s privacy options

If you set it as a public group:

  • Any site member can join this group.
  • This group will be listed in the groups directory and in search results.
  • Group content and activity will be visible to any site member.

If you set it as a private group:

  • Only users who request membership and are accepted can join the group.
  • This group will be listed in the groups directory and in search results.
  • Group content and activity will only be visible to members of the group.

If you set it as a hidden group:

  • Only users who are invited can join the group.
  • This group will not be listed in the groups directory or search results.
  • Group content and activity will only be visible to members of the group.

Setting Group Invitations

You are able to select which members of this group are allowed to invite others:

  • A) All group members,
  • B) Group admins and moderators only,
  • C) Group admins only.

Enabling a group forum

You have the option to enable your group to have its own group discussions within the Forums.

This allows members of these groups to communicate in a structured, bulletin-board fashion. These group discussions have their own visibility settings which can be set to either group members only or publicly visible within the expat forums.

 Check the box if you wish to have a forum in the group.

Adding a group picture

You are able to upload a group profile picture to represent the group. The image will be shown on the main group page and in search results. – For best results, make sure that your profile image is no smaller than 150px wide by 150px tall.

– To skip uploading the group profile photo, select the ‘Next Step’ button. Please note that groups with no group picture will get a default one.

Adding a group cover

You are able to upload a group cover image to represent this group. The group cover Image will be used as the header of your group. – For best results, make sure that your cover image is no smaller than 900px wide by 350px high.

– To skip the group profile photo upload process, select the ‘Next Step’ button. Please note that groups with no cover image will get a default one.

Inviting people to the group

After the group picture and cover image stage, you will then be able to select other members to invite to the group. This option only allows you to invite members from your friends list.

Amending settings for the group

If you later wish to amend any settings for the group, you can select the ‘manage’ option from the main group menu. – You must be a group admin to access this option.

The Expat Forum

Taipei Expats offers a forum that covers a vast range of topics for all members to contribute and benefit from. The expat forum is within the Community menu. Anyone can visit the forum and read posts, but you must be logged in to your account to start any topics and reply to any posts.

Group discussions held within the forums

Group admins have the option to host their own group discussions within the expats forum. This allows members of these groups to communicate in a structured, bulletin-board fashion. These group discussions have their own visibility settings which can be set to either group members only or publicly visible within the expat forums.
