Registering an Account with Taipei Expats

Registering an account is quick, easy and totally free. An account on Taipei Expats gives you full membership to benefit from the Taipei expat community.

The Taipei community is a platform for local expatriates to discuss and offer help to each other in all aspects of expat life in the Taiwanese capital. So, whether you are looking for advice from others experiences, or network with other like-minded expats, the friendly and helpful Taipei Community is always just one click away.

Registration Confirmation

After registering to signing up for an account, you should receive a confirmation email which may take anything up to 10 minutes to reach your inbox. This email comes with an activation link that you must access in order to confirm and complete the registration process

Not Receiving an Activation Email upon Registering

If you haven’t yet received an activation email after 10 minutes of registering, there are some likely reasons as to why, and what you can do to resolve it:

  1. There may have been a typo in the email address you registered with. Try registering again with the same email address. If the account already exists, you will see an error indicating that there is a duplicate email address.
  2. The automated activation email message may have been caught by your spam filter, so please check your spam or junk mail folder for an email from notifications@taipeiexpats.com.
  3. Your email provider might have blocked the automated email message. You may need to add notifications@taipeiexpats.com to your email contacts or approved senders list in order to receive it.
  4. If you’re still experiencing any registration related issues, please contact us at: support@taipiexpats.com with your full name and the email address you used for the registration, and we’ll get back to you as soon as possible.

Recovering your Lost Password

If you have forgotten your password, don’t panic, recovering it is easy.

If you are signed out, the option to recover your lost password is within your Account drop-down menu. You can recover it by the Lost Password option.

Once you are in the Lost Password page, enter your email address, and you will be sent an email message with a link to follow to reset your password.

If you are signed in, the option to recover your lost password is within your Account drop-down menu. You can recover it by the Change Password option.

Managing your Account Settings

Once you have an account with Taipei Expats, you will have full site access to the community, services and features.

You are able to manage all these site features by going to your Account Menu options within your account. Scroll down to the ▽ Show Menu Options and drop-down the menu.

Your Profile Details

Your profile details are the basic information that is available within your profile for others to see and know about you within the community. Having an updated and active profile keeps you visible. You are also more likely to come up as a suggested to other like-minded members. It makes an ideal starting point for getting the most out of networking within the Taipei expat community. Not only that, other expat members can better understand who you are and be more willing to connect with you.

You can update your profile details in the Profile Details section of your Account. Enter your information within the fields you want to update. Once you have filled in your new details, don’t forget to scroll down to the bottom of the page and select “Save Changes”.

*Please note that you have the ability to set what can be seen by everyone, friends, members and only you.

Your Personal Information

Your personal information page allows you to provide more in-depth details about you such as your Professional / Employment Status and the languages you can speak. Depending on your privacy settings, your information page can help you network with other local and like-minded expat members.

You can update your information in the Personal Details section of your Account. Enter your information within the fields you want to update. Once you have filled in your new details, don’t forget to scroll down to the bottom of the page and select “Save Changes”.

*Please note that you have the ability to set what can be seen by everyone, friends, members and only you.

Your Contact Details

Keeping your contact details up-to-date helps you stay in touch with other members within the community.

You can update your contact details in the Contact Details section of your Account. Enter your contact information within the fields you want to update. Once you have filled in your new details, don’t forget to scroll down to the bottom of the page and select “Save Changes”.

Your Notification Settings

You are able to set what you want to be notified by email on by your Notification Settings. This menu allow you to toggle on and off for notifications such as mentions, friend requests and group invites.

Your Profile Privacy Settings

You are able to set your profile to private where only your friends can view and access it. This settings can be changed at anytime within your account.

Your Profile Interests

Based on your preferences, you are able to receive recommend events, groups and members that match your set Profile Interests.

Your profile has a very useful friend searching tool that helps you find other like-minded expats within the Taipei community. In order to take advantage of this searching tool, you must first ensure that you have set all your interests within your profile.

To do this, go to your interests within your Profile Settings, set them all and save your preferences. Once they are set, return back to your Profile Details and see them listed as interest links under the Profile Interests heading. Each interest is a link that will search for other members who share that interest with you. You are able to visit these members in common, and be able to contact them and add them as a friend to your Taipei expat network.

Your Expat Services Subscriptions

Based on your subscriptions, you are able to receive notifications on the latest Taiwan expat news, newly published Taipei guides and articles and details on the upcoming events and festivals. You are can set your subscription settings within your Subscriptions.

You are able set your warnings and alerts within your Account.

These notifications include: Nearby typhoons, severe storms, earthquakes, tsunami, droughts, floods, contaminations and other various disruptions.

Your Profile Page Space

This feature allows you to customize your very own page space within your profile. This is an optional page for you to add your own profile details and works that you’d like to share with others within the Taipei expat community.

Your Social Networks

You are able to connect all your social networks to your Taipei Expats profile. This allows other expat members to connect with you on other platforms if you wish for them to do so.

Your profile settings allow you to configure your profile features from within your profile. The Profile Settings also display a menu of all your important profile preferences:

Your Account Settings

Your Account Settings allow you to configure your account features from within your profile. This gives you the option to view or set your Profile Settings, Account Settings and Widget Settings.

Advanced Account Settings

The advanced account settings give you more important configurations to your account. These settings allow you to change your account username, export all your account data and even the option to deactivate and remove your account permanently. You can find the advanced account settings in your Account.

If you are unhappy with your username, you can change it within your Advanced Settings. Simply go to the Change username settings and enter the new Username of your choice.

Exporting Your Account Data

You have the option to download all your personal account information to your local drive. This can be done within your Advanced Settings. Simply go the Export Data options and request to have an export of all your personal data. Once you have submitted your request, you should get an email within a few hours later that will have an attached compressed file of all your profile data. The data will be sent to the email you provided within your contact information, so please ensure it is correct and up to date.

Your Billing Options

Your community membership account is completely free. This means your subscription is not recurring and therefore you will not need to update your billing information within your Billing Options.

There is a premium level membership being developed which will require a monthly subscription. The premium membership will give members early access to features and paid content, such as downloadable Taipei ebook guides and much more. This is currently in the pipeline, and should be successfully rolled out later on within the year.

Your Invoicing Options

Your community membership account is completely free. This means your subscription is not recurring and therefore you won’t be issued with any invoices on a community membership. Members that are on a paid membership account will find their monthly invoices issued within your Invoicing Options.

Account Deactivation

If you need to put your Taipei Expats profile on hold, you can deactivate your account. Deactivating disables your profile and hides your name and photos from most things you’ve shared. Some info might still be visible to others, like your name in someone else’s friends list and messages you exchanged with other members.

When your account is deactivated:

  • You will not be able to perform any action unless your account is active again,
  • Your activities will be hidden from all users,
  • Your profile will be hidden from all users,
  • You will not be able to receive/send friendship requests or messages,
  • You will be able to log back in (which would reactivate your account).

To deactivate your account, go to your Settings and select the Advanced Settings option from the menu. Once you are in the advanced settings, select Account Status from the list. You will then be taken to your account status options to deactivate your account. choose ‘Deactivate’ and then follow the steps to confirm. You can reactivate your account whenever you want by logging back into your profile or when you use your Taipei Expats account to log in somewhere else. This means your account will be completely restored.

If you have trouble logging back in, you can recover your lost password within the Account drop-down menu. Select the Lost Password option from the drop-down menu.

Permanently Deleting Your Account

If you don’t think you will use Taipei Expats again, you can request to have your account permanently deleted. Please keep in mind that you won’t be able to reactivate your account or retrieve anything you have added. If you decide to permanently delete your account instead of deactivating it, you won’t be able to access your account again.

Some of the things you do on Taipei Expats are not stored in your account. For example, a friend may still have messages from you even after you delete your account. That information remains after you delete your account.

To cancel and delete your account, go to your Settings and select the Advanced Settings option from the menu. Once you are in the advanced settings, select Delete Account from the list. Please ensure you have read and understood the information about permanently removing your account. You are able to request to have your account permanently deleted by completing and submitting an account cancellation form.

Your account will be fully deleted within 24 hours after submitting this request. Once deleted, you will not be able to reactivate your account or retrieve any of the content or information you have added.
