Lantern Festival 2025

There are many activities all over Taiwan during the Lantern Festival which includes thousands of sky lanterns light over Pingxi District in New Taipei.

Lantern Festival can be traced back to 2,000 years ago. The most popular traditions celebrated at this national-wide festival are enjoying letting off lanterns, illuminated light theater projection shows, beautifully crafted lantern displays, and lion/dragon dances.

🗓️ Lantern Festival is an observed holiday, all schools and businesses should still be running as usual.

The Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival

There is an annual celebration every February called the Sky Lantern Festival. It usually is a blaze of luminous glory, 100,000 to 200,000 hot air balloons emblazon a full moonlit sky. Although this holiday is celebrated all across Asia, nowhere in the world is it more recognized than Pingxi, a remote mountain town an hour-long drive from Taipei.

Visitors can write their wishes on a sky lantern and release it to the sky in various places in town. Thousands of people travel here to see the superb scene of innumerable sky lanterns rising into the sky. During each night of the festival, thousands of sky lanterns illuminate the night skies of northern Taiwan is truly an amazing sight.

In Taipei City

A giant red and white cosmic UFO weighing over two tons will be the main lantern at the upcoming 2022 Taipei Lantern Festival which will kick off on Feb. 11 in Taipei’s Shilin District.

In Kaohsiung

A Lantern Festival event is to be held in Kaohsiung from Feb. 15 to 28. The 2022 Taiwan Lantern Festival is to be held in Kaohsiung from Feb. 15 to 28. It will, for the first time, feature “duel lantern themes” – a national bird of Taiwan and a light theater in the harbor city of Kaohsiung.

The other highlight of the annual illumination spectacle is a projection mapping show, which projects imagery onto the exterior of the 381-meter-wide white building at the National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts as a giant canvas. Using 18 projectors, the light theater will tell the tales of Taiwan and Kaohsiung.
